Crystals

Category Introduction

Crystal products are passive components most commonly used as time or frequency references in electronic systems. Consisting of a piezoelectric crystal that mechanically vibrates at a known frequency, their use requires provision of an external oscillator circuit with carefully designed capacitance, drive voltage, and series resistance characteristics, to generate a signal at the indicated crystal frequency that operates successfully over the operating temperature range, without damaging the crystal element. Active devices which integrate this additional necessary circuitry are considered oscillators and are catalogued separately.

About Crystals

What are Crystals?

Crystals

Crystals are essential components in the realm of electronics, primarily used for their ability to stabilize frequencies in electronic circuits. They function based on the piezoelectric effect, where mechanical stress applied to a crystal generates an electrical charge, and vice versa. This property allows crystals to oscillate at precise frequencies when subjected to an alternating current, making them ideal for timing and frequency control applications in various electronic devices.

Types of Crystals

Quartz Crystals

Quartz crystals are the most commonly used type in electronic applications due to their excellent frequency stability and low cost. They are widely used in clocks, radios, and computers to provide accurate timekeeping and frequency control.

AT-Cut Crystals

AT-cut crystals are a specific orientation of quartz crystals that offer a balance between frequency stability and temperature sensitivity. They are often used in temperature-compensated crystal oscillators (TCXOs) and are suitable for applications where temperature variations are a concern.

BT-Cut Crystals

BT-cut crystals are another orientation of quartz crystals, optimized for applications requiring high-frequency stability over a wide temperature range. They are commonly used in precision oscillators and communication devices.

SC-Cut Crystals

SC-cut crystals are designed for ultra-high stability applications, such as in scientific instruments and high-precision frequency standards. They offer superior performance in terms of aging and temperature stability compared to other cuts.

How to choose Crystals?

When selecting crystals for a specific application, several key parameters must be considered:

  • Frequency: Ensure the crystal's frequency matches the desired application requirements.
  • Load Capacitance: Choose a crystal with the appropriate load capacitance for the circuit design.
  • Temperature Stability: Consider the operating temperature range and select a crystal with suitable stability characteristics.
  • Package Type: Select a package that fits the physical and environmental constraints of the application.

To evaluate product quality and reliability, review supplier certifications, customer reviews, and test reports. Consider environmental factors such as humidity and vibration, and ensure proper installation to prevent mechanical stress on the crystal.

Applications of Crystals

Consumer Electronics

In consumer electronics, crystals are used in devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops to provide accurate timing for processors and communication modules, ensuring seamless operation and connectivity.

Telecommunications

Crystals play a crucial role in telecommunications, where they are used in base stations, routers, and modems to maintain stable frequencies for data transmission and reception, ensuring reliable communication networks.

Automotive Industry

In the automotive industry, crystals are used in engine control units (ECUs), infotainment systems, and navigation devices to provide precise timing and synchronization, enhancing vehicle performance and safety features.

Medical Devices

Crystals are integral to medical devices such as ultrasound machines and pacemakers, where they ensure accurate frequency control for diagnostic imaging and life-saving functions.

Aerospace and Defense

In aerospace and defense, crystals are used in radar systems, satellite communications, and navigation equipment, providing the necessary frequency stability for mission-critical operations.
